Springfield, Mass. - The top two seeds, Marist College and Iona College, will meet in the 2013 MAAC Women’s Basketball Championship Game at noon on Monday, March 11 at the MassMutual Center in Springfield, Mass. The game will air live on ESPNU.
Marist has reeled off 20 wins in a row and is coming off a 61-36 blowout victory against fifth-seeded Niagara University in the semifinals. The Red Foxes will be looking to claim their eighth consecutive MAAC title and eighth overall. Leading the charge will be 2013 Pepsi Max Defensive Player of the Year, Leanne Ockenden, and MAAC Sixth Player of the Year, Kristina Danella.
Iona has won its last 9 contests, including victories over seventh-seeded Canisius College and sixth-seeded Siena College in the MAAC Women’s Basketball Championships. But, the Gaels have to face Marist, a team they have not beaten since a 62-46 win during the 2000-2001 season under coach Michelle Brusseau. Iona will look to their Pepsi Max Player of the Year, Damika Martinez and Pepsi Max Rookie of the Year, Joy Adams, to lead them to the programs first ever championship victory.
The winner will receive the MAAC’s automatic bid to the 2012 NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship.

Springfield, Mass. - Fourth-seeded Iona College will face sixth-seeded Manhattan College in the title game of the 2013 MAAC Men’s Basketball Championship on Monday, March 11 at 9 p.m., live on ESPN2.
Iona reached the championship for the 12th time in school history with a 68-58 win over Siena College in the quarterfinals and a 79-73 victory over Niagara University in the semifinals. The Gaels have won seven MAAC titles since helping found the MAAC 32 years ago – 1982, 1984, 1985, 1998, 2000, 2001 and 2006.
Manhattan will make their seventh appearance in the title game after claiming a 55-52 win over Loyola University Maryland in the quarterfinals and a 60-42 victory over Fairfield University in the semifinals. The Jaspers have earned three MAAC titles – 1993, 2003 and 2004.
Monday night’s contest marks the first time that Iona and Manhattan will have ever met in the title game of the MAAC Men’s Basketball Championship.

Springfield, Mass. - MAAC Defensive Player of the Year Rhamel Brown scored 12 points with 12 rebounds and sixth-seeded Manhattan held off No. 3 seed Loyola for a 55-52 victory in the quarterfinals of the 2013 MAAC Men’s Basketball Championship Saturday night.
Manhattan (13-17) led the entire second half, though Loyola (21-11) threatened late, pulling within 53-52 on Dylon Cormier’s three-point play.
The Greyhounds missed three consecutive shots in the final 35 seconds.
Cormier paced the Greyhounds with 14 points and seven rebounds, while Anthony Winbush added 12 points.
Manhattan plays seventh-seeded Fairfield in the semifinals Sunday at 4:30 p.m.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Derek Needham scored 19 points and hit six straight free throws in the last minute, leading Fairfield to a 43-42 victory over Rider Saturday night in the quarterfinals of the 2013 MAAC Men’s Basketball Championship.
The Stags (19-14) beat Rider (18-14) for the third time this season to reach Sunday’s semifinals.
Fairfield led 18-14 at halftime. Needham, the only Stag in double figures, hit a 3-pointer with 3:40 left giving Fairfield the lead for good, 35-34. The Stags made their next eight free throws, two by Maurice Barrow, then six straight by Needham.
Rider answered with Daniel Stewart’s layup and six consecutive foul shots, two each by Anthony Myles, Jonathon Thompson (12 points) and Nurideen Lindsey. That made it 43-42 with 1 second left.
Needham then missed two free throws, the second intentionally, and time expired.
Fairfield shot 14 of 47 (29.8 percent) from the floor, Rider 13 of 44 (29.5 percent).

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Lamont Jones scored 33 points and Sean Armand 24 to give Iona an 89-85 victory over Canisius in Saturday’s Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference quarterfinals.
Jones made all 14 of his free throws and Armand was 11 of 12 for the fourth-seeded Gaels (18-13), who will play top-seeded Niagara in Sunday’s semifinals. Twelve of Jones’ free throws came in the final 7:35, and consecutive layups by Jones and Taaj Ridley gave Iona an 82-77 lead with 59 seconds left.
The Gaels made 34 of 40 free throws (85 percent), while the fifth-seeded Golden Griffins (18-13) were 12 of 21 (57.1 percent) from the line.
Three-pointers nearly helped Canisius make up the difference. They shot 47.8 percent (11 of 23) behind the arc to Iona’s 27.8 percent (5 of 18).
Billy Baron led the Golden Griffins with 24 points and made 4 of 7 3-pointers. Harold Washington added 17 points.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Antoine Mason scored 21 points, Juan’ya Green added 15 and top-seeded Niagara pulled away from Siena, 74-62, Saturday in the quarterfinals of the 2013 MAAC Men’s Basketball Championship.
The Purple Eagles (19-12) built a nine-point lead with 5:51 to go until halftime, but the ninth-seeded Saints used a 12-4 spurt get within 32-31.
Marvin Jordan’s trey opened the second half, then Mason scored seven straight points, capped by a three-point play with 17:19 left, to give Niagara an 11-point lead.
Siena (8-24) came back again with an 11-2 run to make it 44-42 with 12:19 remaining, but the Saints could get no closer.
The Purple Eagles, who swept Siena in the regular season, have won five of their past six games and are seeking their first MAAC title since 2007.
Evan Hymes and Rob Poole scored 14 points apiece and O.D. Anosike had 13 points and 10 rebounds for Siena.
